As a huge fan of the supermodel Gigi Hadid, I was so super excited when I found out that she was launching her own line of makeup with Maybelline. It totally made sense because Gigi is one of the faces of Maybelline, and after her many collaboration successes (Tommy Hilfiger & Vogue Eyewear etc), it’s no shock that she’s added Maybelline to her belt.
I also completely understand the whole concept behind the packaging. The nude pink is definitely the ‘in thing’ of 2017, majorly highlighted by products from Fenty Beauty. And that would make sense too because anyone that follows Gigi on social media knows that she’s a big fan of Rihanna.
So I was extremely excited to get my hands on this collection, especially because it is limited edition. And I don’t know, does anyone else also get slightly crazy when they hear “limited edition”? Like my level of want just went up 101%.
Oh, and also, the title? The ‘half’ Asian bit it very important. I am only half. The other half of me is still western. I may or may not make this kind of posts a series thing, where I review different collections and products - depending what everyone thinks - I have so much I want to talk about!
So anyways, before I talk everyone into boredom, I wanted to share my own 2-pence on this collection. I have already mentioned that the packaging is stunning. A few of the items came in boxes like the mascara and the lip kits, and I adore the holographic element. And of course, we all love the nude pink, simple but classy packaging of everything.
Since I shopped this collection over the black Friday weekend, I didn’t hate the price as much as everyone else did. On that weekend Superdrug did 3 for 2 on this line so the impact on my bank account wasn’t as hard. At the same time, I totally understand the fact that Maybelline is normally a little cheaper, and people were most mad about the Jetsetter palette which I believe was about £30, and that is way too expensive for Maybelline since they are a drugstore brand.
But yes, overall, this collection wasn’t overly expensive, but definitely more expensive than other products launched by Maybelline. I don’t normally mind if they are new products, but I personally am not a fan if they have just launched the exact same product but increased the price just because of a new packaging (I.e. The Lash Sensational Mascara).
The Product Line
Taking advantage of Superdrug’s 3 for 2, I chose three products that I liked the look of the most but in the end, I could not choose between two lip kit colours, so I brought a fourth product. After watching videos of reviews online and reading a few blog posts, I knew I liked the West Coast collection way more than I liked the East Coast one, especially for eyeshadow.
If you didn’t know, Gigi launched her collection almost in three parts; The Jetsetter palette, and then the East and West Coast together. Now I am not American, but this is the vibe that I get from the 2 sides. East coast is subtler and chic whereas the west coast is warmer and fun. So, I chose the West Coast Warm Eyeshadow Palette, but lately I am very much into my nudes and cooler toned lippies, so I went for the lip kits in shades Erin and Taura. Lastly, I wanted to get another product that I use almost every single day without fail, and that is mascara. Since I have already tried the Lash Sensational mascara and didn’t really get the hype (I know don’t shoot me), I thought I would try the new Fibre Mascara.
West Coast Warm Eyeshadow Palette
I really adore this palette, it’s the cutest little thing to pack into my makeup bag, and I prefer this packaging than the East Coast eyeshadow palettes, which I must admit looks a little sad. But the shades in this palette is wonderful. I have neutral skin tone but because it is kind of olive/lightly tanned, I normally go for warm eyeshadows. There are three matte shades and three shimmer shades, which are all beautiful and it’s exactly how I imagine the west coast of America to be.
The pigments didn't blow me away, especially the matte ones but, it is a sweet little palette and with a wet brush the shimmers could look absolutely stunning.
I got to admit, before this, I had never tried a fibre mascara before. And I gotta say, it’s a slightly strange concept. After trying the mascara with and without the fibres, I really like it without the fibres. Because I am very picky about my mascaras (due to my half Asian eyes), a lot of mascaras end up smudging on me, but this one actually stayed put really well, and it does give me incredible length!
These have been a major thing ever since Kylie Jenner started the trend, and actually, I quite like it. As I mentioned earlier I couldn’t choose between two shades, so I brought them both because that is what everybody would do, right? I ended up choosing Taura, a light pale nude and Erin, a neutral toned purple. The lip liners are soft and wonderful. They leave a matte finish and my favourite thing is that they are twist-up, so you don’t need to carry an extra sharpener. The lipsticks are really smooth and leave a satin finish.
Taura ended up being a lot paler than I imagined (even though it looks significantly darker on my arm). I have plans to work this with a darker or more pink lip liner underneath so that I don’t end up looking ill. However, Erin, I absolutely love. It’s my first neutral/cool toned lipstick and I am in love. I noticed before that my other warm toned dark lipsticks can sometimes make my face look a bit rounder. Am I crazy? Probably. I have always liked the name Erin anyways, and its just such a perfect colour for fall and winter.
This little nifty thing that looks like a passport holder came for free when I purchased all these products on Superdrug. I really like it. It looks nice as it matches the rest of the packaging for the collection and I like the little Gigi stamp on it. I don’t think I would have spent money on it but it is useful if you were to go travelling. I found that it holds the products that I purchased perfectly.
So there you have it! I realise that this collection launched about a month ago so there are probably plenty of reviews out but I wanted to put in my thoughts too! This collection is currently still available at Superdrug, along with the makeup organiser.
I think I’ll branch out to try the red lipsticks in the collection next! What are your thoughts on this collection?
P.S. Did anyone notice Nathan photobombing me on one of the pictures above?
