I remember a few years ago when the whole ‘strobing’ thing came about, and contouring became the next big thing. Except by now that this is still a huge deal, and most people that apply makeup don’t skip this step. Why? Because cosmetics are made to make us look better and feel better, and contouring does just that and more.
When I first discovered my love for makeup, I had purchased a little contour kit with three matte shades, and I got home, looked at it, and
was completely clueless. Eventually I discovered the magical properties of a good highlighter, so I quickly fell in love with the trend.
Even now, I love just simply patting or sweeping a little bit of highlight at the top of my cheeks and on my brow bone without any contour to just give my face that little bit of a glow and a bit of depth. And here just in time for the end of summer, in no particular order, is 5 that I am absolutely loving and will very likely continue to love for a long time.
1. Benefit Watts Up
This was the first proper highlighter that I had discovered. I got this little miniature size from a Benefit set that I had purchased on a plane one year. It is a beautiful shade and despite being a cream, it is absolutely not scary to use at all. I find this a very nice starting point for both creams and powders because it is not too over the top and it can be very natural for a glowy day look.
2. Mac Soft & Gentle
Now this one is for those of you who like a big wow factor with your highlight. I personally really love this one because even though it is absolutely stunning, you can still dim it down with a few pats of your finger or a beauty blender. But this highlighter can definitely take you to Mars.
3. Hourglass Ambience Lighting Edit Powders
Although not always at the top of my list, the delicacy of Hourglass powders definitely deserve a place here. The highlighters that this brand produce are quite subtle, to the point where they could be glowy face powders if you wanted. But these would definitely be more of an appeal to some, especially in the colder months. This particular palette was limited edition but the individual powders could be purchased and Hourglass have made a similar palette of a later generation.
4. Urban Decay Shapeshifter Palette
This palette is just absolute WOWZA. Urban Decay rarely disappoints with their products and this is certainly not one of them. I don’t often find a makeup product that I love so much that I’m very certain I would repurchase it once I hit pan. The entire product as a whole is simply gorgeous for the price and the highlighter is just to die for. This is a contour palette I will be sticking to for a very long time, and luckily, it is not a limited edition product.
5. Sleek Solstice Palette
Sleek is a hidden gem for good quality, yet affordable makeup so this little shiny palette is by far the cheapest of the lot, and for the price you pay, the highlighters are pretty damn notice-worthy. There is one cream shade which I don’t tend to use but the incredible purple tone highlighter is beautiful for a bright glow, and the other 2 shades ensure that it will suit most pale to tanned skin tones.
